Inspired by The Dark Night of the Soul by St. John of the Cross (1542–1591), “Dark Night” draws from a mystical framework describing two essential stages: the renunciation of earthly senses and passions, followed by a deeper purification of the soul’s higher faculties—intellect, memory, and will.
In Fantompass ’interpretation, the mystical process is reimagined as the inner journey of a man who, after losing the woman he loves, enters his own “dark night.” Sung in English, the verses express deprivation and inner silence before the composition unfolds into a dramatic instrumental passage evoking an eremitic life in a cold, solitary forest—culminating in the appearance of a luminous stag, a traditional symbol of Christian Divinity.
“Dark Night” moves through expressive and rhythmically complex landscapes, including shifting meters such as 6/8, 10/8, and 5/8. Guitar, bass, drums, and keyboards are joined by counterpoints of saxophone and flute, with layered vocal harmonies contributing to the track’s atmosphere of mystery, contemplation, and spiritual ascent.
The cover artwork for “Dark Night” digitally reinterprets The Vision of Saint Hubert (1890) by German symbolist painter Franz von Stuck, depicting a stag bearing a radiant crucifix between its antlers that illuminates the surrounding darkness.

Fantompass is a progressive rock band from Concepción, Chile, formed in 2022. What began as a small project has grown into a nine-member ensemble, weaving together keyboards, electric guitar, bass, drums, saxophone, flute, handpans, narration, and layered vocals.
Rooted in classic progressive rock—with influences such as Genesis, Renaissance, and Happy the Man—the band expands its sound through progressive metal, Celtic textures, and minimalist elements, creating music that moves between restraint and intensity, atmosphere and weight.
Fantompass works within a conceptual artistic framework, favoring extended forms, evolving structures, and constant shifts in rhythm and dynamics. Lyrics are written in English and draw from literary and spiritual sources, including the mystical writings of Saint John of the Cross, the poetry of T. S. Eliot, and ancient Christian monastic traditions such as the Desert Fathers, which directly informed “Dark Night.”
Live performance is central to the band’s identity. Their concerts combine theatrical staging, medieval-inspired aesthetics, and visual projections, shaping an immersive experience where narrative, sound, and image converge. In 2025, Fantompass presented HUMBLE: A Prog-Rock Fable, a two-hour live production integrating music, animation, and visual storytelling.
