Morgan Garrett releases The Mirror, Announces 2025 Japan Tour

Morgan Garrett’s interpretation of Appalachian paranoia and wonderment evolves with his forthcoming single “The Mirror”, featuring performances by new studio and live members Jackie McDermott (Show Me the Body, The Sediment Club) on drum kit and Zach Darrup on electric guitar. This arrangement is a transition from Morgan’s familiar solo executions.

“The Mirror” presents as a triptych, beginning with a ballad-like disillusionment in Morgan’s distinct southern drawl. Harp, violins, and disembodied drumming meld & crescendo into a ‘no-metal’ bridge with gargled skramz, detuned synths and drop-tuned guitar, akin to a hillbilly Korn. Anxious free-horns add a polished clamor to the percussion that strikes with the spirit of an axe swing, reminiscent of a hybrid Swans/Glenn Branca. The song collapses into a whispered and sung devotional confession to oneself, kindred to the tenderness of Daniel Johnston. “The Mirror” is Morgan’s first release since his 2024 debut LP Purity on Orange Milk Records, and his most realized project to date.
About
Morgan Garrett has long been a stalwart presence in independent American experimental music. One of those souls reared in the borderlands where rural Appalachia begins to melt into the Midwest, where the long shadows of DuPont Chemical and Perdue Pharma lay over thousands of lives. Reaching for any sonic tools without pretense of recapitulating any musical tradition, his work evades the confines of genre, but has found a home amidst both the more personal and off-kilter visions from American noise and industrial music, and the fringes of electronic music. Morgan's live performances are notoriously potent and surreal, often compared to Butoh. Strobing footlights both obfuscate and illuminate Morgan's extreme gestures and unwavering energy throughout his psychodrama.
The 2024 release of his debut LP Purity on Orange Milk Records underscores his commitment to his craft and to the wider world of challenging electronic music. Morgan followed this release with the "Purity USA Tour", a 46 day self-booked headlining tour extending across the CONUS, and a 14 day EU/UK tour with a performance at Berghain in Berlin for CTM Festival. Upcoming tours include support for YHWH Nailgun across North America April 11 & April 22-May 7 & a full band Japan tour in June 2025.
