British-born, Los Angeles-based producer and musician TROPICS (Chris Ward) shares his entrancing new single “Cherry”, out July 21st via his own imprint Modern Entity. Serving as the fourth release from his upcoming album Reality Fever (out September 3rd, 2025), “Cherry” signals a tonal shift in the record — acting as a meditative, instrumental breather amidst heavier moments.

A shimmering blend of downtempo electronica, ambient textures, and retro-futuristic synths, “Cherry” draws on Ward’s early chillwave roots while pushing into bold new sonic territory. It’s both nostalgic and forward-facing — a lush, hypnotic groove that glides between worlds.

“This track was aimed to be a chugging yet hypnotic and blissed-out palette cleanser halfway through the forthcoming album,” says Ward. “It presents a moment where the tone changes from the initial driving, heavy singles... we flip to the B-side for the more ambient and electronica-leaning chapter. This instrumental beat is made with intent to capture all the previous Tropics nostalgic, chillwave moments and bring them all together in a brand new dynamic sound.”

“Cherry” follows the June single “Ionian Mirage”, which introduced Reality Fever’s more reflective, escapist themes with its warm Rhodes loops and Mediterranean daydreams. While “Ionian Mirage” conjured sun-bleached longing, “Cherry” opens the portal further — leaning into the therapeutic potential of atmosphere, groove, and repetition.Entirely self-written, produced, and recorded by Ward in his LA studio, Reality Fever explores emotional extremes through a lens of textural nuance and genre fusion — marrying indie, post-punk, ambient, and experimental electronics. A record shaped by anxiety and release, chaos and clarity, it’s a sonic dive into the inner monologue of modern life.

“Heavy drums and rhythmic strumming on the bass, against all the soundscapes that aim to space you out and send you somewhere else,” Ward notes. “I guess it’s a contrast of being chilled / spaced-out but this throbbing underlying angst.”

Reality Fever spans 10 tracks and marks Tropics’ most dynamic work to date — shifting seamlessly between beat-driven catharsis and quiet introspection. Fans of Mount Kimbie, James Blake, Bar Italia, and Toro Y Moi will find resonance in its balance of grit and ambience.
